Admission of Ladies into the SocietyThe constitution of the Society was changed in 1997 when the members agreed by a two thirds majority to permit women to become members. This was done with some encouragement from the City of Edinburgh Council.
The above cartoon published in the Edinburgh Evening News depicts Councillor Lesley Hinds JP with some High Constables outside the City Chambers. Councillor Hinds was at the time prominent in the encouragement given to the Society to change its constitution. Councillor Hinds went on to become Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh (2003 - 2007) and during her period in office was an enthusiastic supporter of the Society.
